PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A former nurse convicted of sexually abusing women in custody at an Oregon prison has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. A federal jury in July convicted Klein on 17 counts related to sexual assault and four counts of lying under oath involving nine women. Klein resigned as Oregon State Police was investigating the assault allegations. Prosecutors said Klein abused his position and abused women, violating the public's trust, while doing everything he could to avoid getting caught. Numerous women since 2019 have sued the state Department of Corrections and Klein alleging sexual abuse.

CNN —Robert Chambers, known as the “Preppy Killer” for murdering a teenager in Central Park in 1986, was released again this week from prison after serving time for unrelated drug crimes. Chambers served a 15-year sentence for first-degree manslaughter and second-degree burglary beginning in 1988 and was released in 2003, according to New York State Department of Corrections records. He was imprisoned again in 2008 on unrelated charges of first-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and second-degree assault, according to Department of Corrections records. After serving 15 years at New York’s Shawangunk Correctional Facility, Chambers was released on parole Tuesday. Ron DeSantis to disqualify the judge overseeing the company's lawsuit accusing the governor and his allies of political retaliation. Attorneys for DeSantis had argued that Judge Mark Walker should recuse himself from the lawsuit over his comments in two separate cases that referenced the clash between the governor and the entertainment giant. Disney's lawsuit alleges that DeSantis "orchestrated at every step" a campaign to punish the company for speaking out against a Florida bill limiting classroom discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity. The effort to remove Walker as the judge in Disney's civil case in U.S. District Court in Tallahassee, Florida, came days before DeSantis launched his 2024 presidential campaign. Mr. Stanbro, however, was accused of assault and after he left the hospital was put in solitary confinement. At Clinton Correctional Facility, near the Canadian border, guards kicked and punched a handcuffed man, breaking his rib. In all three cases, the staff members filed false reports to cover up the assaults, court records show, and faced no discipline. The Marshall Project obtained disciplinary data on more than 290 cases in which the corrections department tried to fire guards or supervisors accused of abusing prisoners. In nearly three-quarters of those cases, the agency also accused the officers of covering up misconduct, often by acting in concert.

An officer who broke his baton hitting a prisoner 35 times, even after the man was handcuffed, was not fired. In dozens of documented cases involving severe injuries of prisoners, including three deaths, the agency did not even try to discipline officers, state records show. The records probably reflect only a fraction of the violence guards have inflicted in New York’s corrections system, experts said. These records do not detail prisoner attacks on officers, which the department and the guards’ union said have increased in recent years. A key reason the prison system finds it so hard to get rid of guards is the contract the state signed in 1972 with the union.

Bryan Christopher Kohberger, the man accused of fatally stabbing four University of Idaho students, was removed from a county jail in Pennsylvania and turned over to state police Wednesday, officials said. “He is no longer in the custody of the Monroe County Correctional Facility; he’s in the custody of the Pennsylvania State Police,” warden Garry Haidle said. Less than 24 hours earlier, the 28-year-old Kohberger waived extradition in a Stroudsburg courtroom, paving the way for his trip to Latah County, Idaho. Kohberger was arrested Friday in Albrightsville in northeastern Pennsylvania, about 2,500 miles from Moscow, where the students were killed Nov. 13. The suspect was a doctoral student in the criminal justice and criminology department at Washington State University, 9 miles from Moscow.

Police were reportedly able to link the Idaho killings suspect to the crime scene with DNA. They ran DNA through genealogy databases and got a hit, anonymous law enforcement sources told ABC News. CNN reported that police then tracked the suspect back to Pennsylvania, where he was arrested. Experts previously told Insider that those who send their DNA to genealogy companies should do so with caution if they want to protect their genetic privacy. Joseph Giacalone, who used to helm the Bronx's cold case unit, told Insider last month.

Kohberger graduated from nearby DeSales University in 2020 with a degree in psychology and earned a master of arts in criminal justice from DeSales in the spring, DeSales University said in a statement Friday. At the time, the person identified himself a "student investigator" at DeSales University and was using a school-issued email address.
